Forgiveness Friday - Resentment

Resentment is a fast growing cancerous tumor that blocks all avenues of forgiveness.  Have no doubt, it is a killer.  The more we dwell on an offense, allow it to stew in our minds and hearts, resentment starts and grows stronger with every stir of the pot.  When resentment has a hold on our hearts, the harder it is to forgive.  Instead of focusing on the love of God, our hearts drown in bitterness to the point where we cannot even see a path towards love.

So, what should we do if we find ourselves stuck in resentment?

It has always helped me to seek out the root of my wounds and press them against the wounds of Christ Jesus.  As I press them into His wounds, I pray, "My wounds are your wounds and your wounds are my wounds."

Reflecting upon the wounds of Christ, I am reminded that to save all of us, He felt every pain we would ever experience.   Jesus understands our wounds and feels our pain.  He was actually right beside us when the offense happened.  Therefore, surrendering over our resentments into His hands is exactly what He desires us to do.  We are helpless when it comes to resentment and humbly admitting our need for Jesus allows us to hand it all over to Him.  After all, it is only through Christ Jesus that we are able to forgive.

So, if you find yourself stuck in resentment, place it in the hands of Jesus in humble trust and surrender.  Doing so will free you from unforgiveness and open your heart to the beauty of God's love flowing through you to others.
